Is TikTok going head-to-head with Google search?

According to a recent writeup from Ashley Cummings for BANKNOTES this isn't too far fetched.

😲 In fact, 40% of young people say they go directly to TikTok or Instagram now instead of Google. 😲

💳 Further, 55% of users say TikTok has exposed them to a new product. 💳

Why?

TikTok is a trust engine!

“Search a term on Google, and you’ll get the answer you need, but there’s less and less confidence that it’s the answer you trust. After all, the Google algorithm is so notoriously complex that it’s no secret the best options for results are the ones the most significant digital marketing budgets can buy.”

- Mindy Thomas, founder and lead creator at Upload Creative.

Essentially, social platforms are visual and more compelling than written reviews, TikTok is winning in the search game in niches where visuals are essential to the experience. This includes travel, makeup, beauty, and food/restaurants

What does this mean for marketing and sales teams?

  • Search is often the largest line item in a brand's marketing budget Should it be still?
  • It's not enough for brands to point boring product ads to a bland product page. Providing creator content that is honest and transparent is key.
  • SEO is more than just Google placement: TikTok descriptions allow for up to 2,200 words, so there's definitely search optimization across TikTok that can be taken advantage of.
